About TOEFL
TOEFL (the Test of English as a Foreign Language) measures the ability of non-native speakers to use and understand English. Internet-Based TOEFL (iBT) was designed in 2005 to replace both previous versions of the test. It has gradually become available worldwide. In comparison with paper and computer-based tests, it eliminates the structure section, and adds the speaking and writing sections. It also includes integrated tasks that require the test taker to combine more than one skill. The goal of TOEFL iBT remains unchanged in comparison with the paper- and computer-based tests. The TOEFL iBT score measures the communication skills of those who wish to enter a school or universities where English is the native language.
Most people take this test as a requirement for admission into colleges and universities where instruction is in English. Some take the test to evaluate and demonstrate their English proficiency as it is required by many government agencies, scholarship programs, licensing/certification agencies and private corporations and companies all over the world.
The test measures general English proficiency. It is not considered to test the academic aptitude or the subject matter competence. Besides TOEFL, institutions may request:
- academic records
- schools attended
- a letter of intent
